I think that is true...now. However, years and years ago, when most GW players were just little swimmers, and Ultima Online was just coming out I think things were different! Games have gotten alot more mainstream, and things are balancing.

No I don't think so Aaaaagh (it is 5 As right?).
Even in UO (my all time favorite game, mind you) in my guild we had a large amount of female gamers and - I suppose they could have provided fake pictures - in the gallery they didn't look bad at all.
Not supermodel material mind you but they weren't ugly by any stretch.

I wasn't around back then, but I still don't believe that the only females who would consider picking up games were ugly.. why? So there were fewer of them, but i'm sorry, looks have nothing to do with anything. People have different reasons for getting into games, my mum was a gamer back then and there's nothing wrong with her, she also got her mum into rpgs, and I don't believe there was anything wrong with her either.. I don't think women back then thought to themselves "damn, i'm so ugly, i'll play games".
But that's just me.. maybe i'm wrong, i was only born in 1985, what do i know

Everyone of them on the inside.
Unfortunately to a lot beauty is only skin deep.
But to answer the intended question, it really depends. One of them I know that I wouldn't really consider a model at all (she's not ugly, just she doesn't have the qualities most people seem to look for (something large, below the neck and above the stomach))
But anyways she did get a modelling offer, which she took up and is still doing it.
So beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Well in American in the early-mid 90's video games were really a masculine thing. Females didnt participate nearly as much as they do now, research says 10% back then, up to almost 50% now. Also, back then, gamers were almost all kids and teens. My theory is, attractive female teens didnt sit around gaming, they had a more interesting social life. There are some exceptions to be sure. Even today though, my money would be on - if they are a female gamer, and they are a teen they are probably not very socially adept. If they are older though, it gets skewed because of the social distiction between the life of an adult and the life of a hormonal teen.

Are you serious? If I am reading this right, one of you controls the keyboard other one shoots with the mouse? How does that make you good?
And you get scared of electronic boogiemen. Fantastic.

She said 'for fun'.
And what's wrong with that? It's actually pretty fun and it makes it a lot more challenging cause you really have to coordinate with whoever's doing it with you (for me it was me and my friend when we were eating a pizza).
You should try it sometime.
As for being scared of the 'electronic boogiemen' well, can't really say much about that.
Never really been scared of a game, just startled. Doom 3 tried to create a 'holy crap I'm scared to death' atmosphere but failed. Was little more than stuff popping out of (direction).

The only reason I can figure that people are so adamant that female gamer = fat and ugly is because that's the only kind they know.
If they'd actually talk to the good looking girls they might learn a thing or two.

Yeah.. i don't understand why women gamers are fat and ugly, but male gamers are perfectly normal.. it's not true, sure, there are gonna be fat and/OR ugly female gamers, but, it's f all to do with playing games.
And to someone else who said that female gamers, in teens, are more likely to be socially inept, unless you have actual statistics, i think that's balls.. unless they're living their whole life in a mmorpg - if you look at games as a whole, including console games and that, then aspects of gaming can be very social.

Good Point. I'll add this. If they would learn to talk(with) and Listen to Women they would learn quite a bit. A great communicator is a good listener. I also never cared what women look like in real life in this game. I have customers I talk to everyday that I never have seen. Most of them women. I have a fun time with them over the years of doing business. It is "What is between the Ears that matters". Same applies to this game as well.

I'm all for more female gamers. It helps balance out the Male Testorone that goes around. It's sort of like being in an All Boy's School. God how I hated that, but i did enjoy our sister school down the road. 3 girls to 1 boy.
Anyway, I enjoy playing with female gamers, as it's a breath of fresh air.
My thoughts on why Girls only play certain types of games, whether FPS or RPG style etc is all based on Science Fact and is how the brain works differently between Men and Woman and how they perceive the world in general.
So an open mind is needed people to understand this and may help us understand more about what a Girl Gamer likes and to help you guys understand why when buying a house, the ladies like to actually go and see the house, why you can see all you need on that piece of paper.
And this can be confirmed by a simple test too, to determine if the ladies have the male Gene that enables them to see 3D in a game as if it was 3D in the Real World.
When men see the 3D image displayed on screen, although it's actually flat on display, we actually see it in our brain as a full 3D image as if we were seeing it in real life, hence the reason why more male players enjoy playing FPS over there female counterparts. However, with RPG's, as they are more often than not, not actually trying to portray full 3D images, such as large scale rooms, offices, factories and open space etc. You get the idea, they enjoy playing those a lot more.
The test I was talking about can be one of two things. Can your female counterpart read a road map without turning it upside down, spinning it around while the male is driving the car. If they can read a map, without turning it around, they quite possibly have the male gene that enables them to see 3D images of the map in the mind and turn it around in there head without spinning the physical map around.
The 2nd test is to do with a sheet of paper and a 3D image drawn on it. If they can see depth of perception, a trait most males have (It's all to do with science and not made up. ) they should be able to see this image as 3D and not just as a plain piece of paper with lines drawn on it. The same as looking at a screen with 3D images drawn on them.
Some of you may be wondering why all this mumbo jumbo, but as we all know, we all think we are all exactly the same.
This is to the men out there, thinking, oh rubbish. Just on the off chance, have you ever checked out that girl you spied across the room, and thought, god she's attractive, look at those nice legs, what an attractive body etc, i'd love to ask her out etc etc.
Well, she already spotted you looking at her, 5 mins before, without even looking directly at you. You've just been caught getting a peak, and all the women know what I'm talking about. Peripheral Vision. Yes, they can see us Men looking at them from the corner of there eye.
So, before you go oggling women, and start sRED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GOing with your mates, think about what you have just read. She has seen everyone of you, and sussed you all out, before you even started whispering.
With regards to the stats given, I hate statistics, because more often than not, they are done on like 1000 or 10000 people. Come on, how can you get a % from that. There must be 300,000,000 gamers around the world, maybe more. Statistics are rubbish, in my opinion.
Other than that, I'm still up for as many gamer girls as we can handle. Bring on the Sex wars. lol
Oh, and to those girls who wonder why us blokes like the in game female chars, namely the Ele. She is pleasing to look at. lol

The few female gamers I have come across have expressed something along these lines. They would rather not make it known that they are female so they don't have to deal with the "do you have a boyfriend?" and "do you want to go out sometime?" More or less, they are there to play the game, not to date.
So it doesn't surprise me that close to half of gamers are female. It's just sad that they (or at least the few I know) feel the need to hide their gender to enjoy themselves.

To me, it does not matter if someone is male or female in this game, as long as they're not suicidal when it comes to MOB's.

I give up on trying to explain why I'm female, why I enjoy gaming and convincing total strangers I'm not a man prentending to be a woman.
Course I'm married, my husband plays GW and I have 3 sons. I grew up on games like Kings Quest, Quest for Glory, Wasterland, Ultima (WAY before it was online). And I played with my mother then.
For years actually, even when I left home, I still played, and often with my mother. We played diablo 2 together for years. Then I moved on to NWN, which I still play some, on a persistent world as a player and DM.
So...female gamers, yes, there are many and not all are sterotypical "what does this button do" gamers. I'd say I know my games pretty good and while I'm not a statistic junky or number cruncher, I think I can play quite well.
After all, I did manage to beat the final GW mission with henchmen playing as a monk

Two things to add here
1) As of right now Women ARE the MAJORITY in America
2) I have 5 females in my Guild (16 members) and they are all "hot" 2 of them to the extent that they almost mirror the female characters they play in-game
As for play and the absolutely wrong assertion that females aren't as good as males or that males are better, well thats just bull. I'll take our female Warrior and Air Elementalist against anyone, thats not to say they will win but they're a couple of the best I've seen and I've been playing since the first Beta.
